Regarding anonymous who mentioned spam - I understood that you refer to tab "Old Riddle" and link at the bottom named "Solution". There is no spam when you click that link. I have personally entered each and every "Solution" link to a valid forum thread with the respective puzzle and its solution. Feel free to send me the URL of the link you refer to and some more details to confirm (or identify the link as one that is not in my gadget). Regarding comment by swartz, I am not sure what you mean. In the tab "Latest Puzzle", there is always only 1 latest puzzle (usually from today) and the link to the puzzle/solution is its title which you can click and new tab with forum thread about the puzzle opens.

If you try to click on solution for riddle from previous day, goes to broken link. Good riddles, but if you are uncertain of answer, you will just be left guessing.

I clicked on the Solution link to a match riddle, and instead of taking me to the solution it opened several new windows. And it opened 'navigate' message box that wouldn't close. I had to shut down my wireless then restart. Junk!

Dan, do you mean that when you have active the tab "Old Riddle" and you refresh the page then the content of "Latest Puzzle" tab is shown? If so, then the explanation is: this happened after I translated this gadget into Chinese and Russian (identification of tabs had to be changed as well for language bundles). It seems that "setprefs" library does not store the user's last selected tab when the tab has language/message bundle reference name instead of regular name. I have addressed this issue to iGoogle gadgets group, however, there is no workaround for the time being as far as I know.

Be as condescending as you like, I don't care; all I'm saying is this: Originally I could click on 'Old Riddle' and it would still be 'Old Riddle' when the iGoogle page refreshed. At some point you took away that option, denying user preference. Now it always reverts to 'Latest Puzzle'. I would like to see that functionality restored. I don't like the constant stream of amateur riddles; I prefer the logic puzzles that often show up in 'Old Riddle'. You've not given any reason why that preference was turned off if it was deliberate; I merely want you to restore what was broken. I mentioned the recurring '__Msg_latest__' bug because it started at the same time you changed the ability to retain tab preference and it might help you locate the bit of code that went wrong.

Hi Dan, I am flattered by your interest in my gadget :-) I am sure you noticed the fallacy in your reasoning (regarding what I consider interesting) - so I won't react to that. Regarding the 'empty old riddle tab', unless you provide me with more details via email I can not help very much (eg. the time it happened, your browser, cache turned on, developer sand box igoogle etc.). Regarding "riddle vs. puzzle", what I consider as interesting and other observations/assumptions of yours, I could explain it to you in a mail if you wish (everything has a reason). And maybe you could direct me to your gadgets/web where I could learn how things can be done better.

So you're saying because *you* think the new puzzles are more interesting; all of us should. 'Fresh' is the highest criteria of rating a puzzle that you can think of. Apparently you are incabable of even *imagining* someone who might like to read the riddle with the solution available if needed. Some people prefer 'Ripened' to 'Fresh'. And yes, the 'empty old riddle tab' *does* happen since the last round of changes; never happened before AFAICT.

Hi Dan, I have noticed what you describe - "__MSG_latest__" a few days ago. However, I have not changed anything so I assume that it was just a temporary issue of Google cache/hosting refresh. Regarding "Old Riddle" tab, I have checked and refreshed the gadget several times and it was never empty. "Old Riddle" tab displays different old hand picked riddle after each refresh. I will have a look at it and investigate the possibility to ignore refresh and display new riddle based on pressing some button by users. "Latest Puzzle" tab enables to read fresh puzzles submitted by anybody and be the first one to solve them. So if you wish to see hand picked puzzles then you can check "Old Riddle" tab - however, they are older and solution is already provided. If you wish to be the first one to provide answer then you can check "Latest Puzzle" tab - however their quality depends on the quality of forum member who sends them but they are fresh (a few minutes old).

No longer looks like the screenshot; tabs now say "__MSG_latest__" and "__MSG_old__"; "old" tab is often empty except for 'note'(!); and it no longer will stay on 'old riddle' when the page refreshes--this is particularly irritating as I preferred the old riddles; at least with those there was some editorial oversight; many of the 'latest' puzzles are gibberish (random unicode) or just plain poor in quality. Please respect the preferences of your users!

Dear Walter Carol, this gadget contains 2 tabs now. The first tab includes the latest puzzle submitted to BrainDen.com Brain Teasers Forum (so it is not random, it is the RSS Feed). The second tab includes random old puzzle in case you wish to see more puzzles and not just the latest puzzle. The forum, as any other forum, has certain rules. One of them is about resurrecting old threads. Imagine that there is a riddle posted 2 years ago and it includes long discussion and solution. What added value would a new post to such thread bring? Especially if such post is only "lol", "nice riddle", "I agree with the solution" or something similar. And to address your third concern (regurgitated content), I and forum moderators motivate members to contribute with new and original content. Repeated puzzles are usually locked. To ensure that members of forum and users of this gadget (since this gadget includes RSS Feed from the forum) always get new content. I believe that this is a fair approach.

.. but then move on. If you have this on a feed as I do, you get random brainden content sent to you. Beware though. If you follow the link, and provide input you are likely to get an e-mail admonishing you about "resurrecting old threads". I've received a few of these now and have since deleted this gadget. The content is largely regurgitated contend spewed in different forms and passed as new.

I don't know which is worse, recommending this gadget to other people, or actually listening to you mindless dribble about how you think yahoo is better. It doesn't matter if you think yahoo is better!!! Some people use this and are use to it, as much as you are use to yahoo. All your doing is stating your opinion, and proving old the saying that "opinions are like buttholes, everyone has them, and most of them stink"!

I dont know, maybe it was just the few puzzles I checked out, but the I found trying to understand some of the puzzle's grammar, just to figure out what it was asking me to do, was more difficult then actually completing the task. Either they have a bunch of non-english speaking people trying to add content, yet not knowing how to say things properly. Or, somewhere along the line, I became an idiot, because broken english and inproper grammar, are now the standard for being able to communicate in english. Either way, this gadget sucks, because all it does it send you to the horrible site (Brainden.com) where all I found were a bunch of questions and puzzles that I had to decipher before i could figure out what they wanted me to do. Tip for the people who run that site: outsourcing isn't always the best option.

These are puzzles mostly from the forums at Brainden.com; where users share new and old puzzles and try to stump each other. So it's a completely mixed bag... you could get something simple one time, amazingly difficult the next. Or something dumb like "how many times can you subtract 2 from 32? Once, then it isn't 32 anymore" /eyeroll If you want the answers available, use the 'Old Puzzle' tab, which links to the original forum thread where you can see the answer (no signup needed to lurk). (BTW - Freaking out because YOUR ISP/Workplace blocked it? Like that's somehow THEIR fault?? Really? Clearly this isn't the gadget for you, as logic skills are often required.)
