Born in Baltimore to Ukrainian immigrant parents, Hayuk moved to San Francisco in 1991, where she became immersed in the city’s renaissance of art, music and activism. Since 2002, Hayuk has been based in Brooklyn, New York, maintaining an independent studio practice while painting her iconic murals all over the world. Maya Hayuk’s “Fuck” is a rearranged mural she originally painted in Coney Island in 2015 and later specifically designed for BEYOND THE STREETS Los Angeles in 2018. Inspired by the precise language of Jenny Holzer’s neighboring installation, Hayuk reworked the painting onsite to read as a defiant and empowering declaration. Hayuk’s paintings and massively scaled murals weave visual information from her immediate surroundings into elaborate, improvised abstractions.
