Eggs……..

1 snail… 10,000 eggs…

Each white dot plastered to the driftwood is an egg, and nearly impossible to scrape off…

Nerite snails (Neritina) are found throughout the tropical waters of the globe, grazing on various algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria across the intertidal zone. Many species of Nerites require saltwater to survive, others are able to live in brackish water, while a few species are able to live in freshwater.

Having such distinct graphic shells and a notorious reputations for being voracious algae eaters, has landed the Nerite snail a popular place in freshwater aquariums. Many other snail species are able to reproduce in freshwater aquariums, but the species of nerites sold in the freshwater aquarium trade require brackish or salt water for their eggs to mature and hatch.

Thankfully this means I don’t have 10,00 little nerites… Just 10,000 eyesores…

  1. That is some interesting facts! How fortunate of you that you won’t have 10,000 little nerites.

  2. What’s going to happen to those eggs then? That’s pretty awesome though!

  3. That’s actually pretty brilliant that snails whose eggs hatch in salt water are used in freshwater tanks. I’d actually really like to know what someone would do if suddenly they had 10,000 nerites on their hands. Maybe pretend the eggs are little Christmas lights instead of eyesores?

  4. Wow, I am glad to see you wont have to deal with 10,000 nerites!

  5. Snail caviar?

  6. I didn’t know sail could lay that much eggs, thanks for the very interesting facts.
