Val Emmich’s debut novel The Reminders follows struggling TV actor Gavin, a man whose grief over losing his partner drives him to burn every last reminder of him and their former life. After the whole fiery event is caught on film and turns him into a reluctant news fixture, Gavin seeks refuge at the home of family friends who have a daughter with a peculiar trait: She can remember every single detail of her life. Turns out she knew Gavin’s late partner, Sydney — and in exchange for sharing those memories, Gavin agrees to help 10-year-old Joan out with a contest she has her sights on. But when Gavin learns surprising details about the end of Sydney’s life, everything he thought about their relationship is thrown into question.
