By the end of this month, The Claw will have been seen by over 7 million screaming fans. No, this isn’t some kind of horror film sensation, it’s the stage that U2 performed on during their U2 360 Tour, and it’s going to be available for purchase. The 360 Tour is the most successful concert tour ever, and while Bono and his bandmates were the central attractions at the 110 concerts (including a recent stop in Toronto), now it’s The Claw’s time to shine.
The stage is an in-the-round structure that was designed to withstand high winds and support up to 185 tonnes – it’s an industry first and was designed by Bono, Willie Williams, and Mark Fisher. During the tour, The Claw carried a cylindrical video screen capable of opening to a size of 14,000 square feet, so that fans up in the nosebleed section could still get a view of the action. It’s a marvel of entertainment engineering and practically a super hero. Now, though, The Claw is heading into retirement. Panther Management, the company that’s handling the sale or the enormous structure, suggests that the structure could be used as a corporate pavilion, an exhibition hall, or a plaza capable of accommodation 2,800 people under cover. The bonus, of course, is that it could be all of those things. The Claw was built to travel (it has solidly performed in 78 cities and 30 countries) and is “easily transportable,” according to Panther.
So how much does the stage cost? Well, you know what they say about things withotut price tags – if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.
