Nan Hua Buddhist Temple

This is one of my favourite peaceful escapes in South Africa. Beauty and tranquility all in one place. It is the largest buddhist temple in Africa. Located in the town of Bronkshorstspruit, only one hour’s drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

As a family, we had our first visit to the temple on one of their specials events of the year, the Chinese New Year which usually happens in January. It attracts thousands of people so it is advisable to go as early as possible to get a good parking close to the entrance. It is generally very hot at this time of the year so apply sunblock and keep dehydrated.

There are no ATM’s in the vicinity so it is best to carry cash as you can get carried away in with all the different types of delicious Chinese vegetarian food available to buying the beautiful Buddha’s or other curios on sale at the many stalls.

My little one was only 13 months and he loved the free space. He was already in his element when his feet touched the ground.

The colourful festivities take place the entire day and occur in the open space in front of the main temple. Beautiful traditions take place to welcome the new year with a dragon dance which is amazing so have your camera ready or just take in the visual awe.

To start celebrations, a very long string of fireworks is lit (with small kids it can get very loud so best to stay a bit far when this goes off or cover their ears).

Inside the main temple, there is a peaceful meditation that occurs where all is welcome to wish the New Year with good blessings and pray for good health, wealth for you, your friends and family. A great soulful experience.

We had the opportunity to light a candle and place it below the Buddhas.

At times you honestly think you are in China! It is truly magnificent and the architecture will blow your mind. The people are most welcoming and friendly which makes the experience more special.

There is my little one owning the steps so The Far East is definitely on our bucket list.

Aarav is really fascinated by the Temple Lions that are located at main entrances and gates around the Temple. They are the mythological animals called Dogs of Fu and are known to be the Temple protectors. I would love these for the entrance of my home! (hint for the hubby)

I highly recommend a visit to the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple. It is possible to go on any other day when the visitor numbers are less. Then go on a free temple tour, visit the curio shop as well as the interesting museum.
