A Consideration: Java Moss

aquascaping_ideas_smallTank8_Photo1Java moss is a kind of aquatic moss that attaches itself to rocks, roots and driftwood. It thrives easily and expands it’s territory to create a carpet. Many aquarium enthusiasts are interested to purchase java moss because they are easy to maintain and helps to create a carpet for their aquarium in a relatively quick time. Also, because Java moss can provide food for the newly formed fry, which can be challenging to feed, it becomes a good addition to an aquarium. Some shrimp like to tear the miniature leaves off it to eat. Java moss does not require any special attention. It accepts all kind of waters, even weakly brackish, and all kinds of light qualities.

Java Moss can be chosen for the project because it represents the desire of human beings to mimic a natural landscape. Similar to the idea that urban nature is a mere surrogate of nature herself, the act of human planting Java Moss in an aquarium symbolises the innate need of humans to want to get back in touch with the nature that they’ve replaced (with urban nature).

While we considered Java Moss, our group still feel that water hyacinth is more effective to narrative the idea of human’s invasiveness when dealing with nature.
