J. W. Waterhouse (0000) Paperback – April 29, 2011

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

"John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) is among the most popular Victorian artists, and many of his paintings have become icons of femininity recognized the world over. With their glowing colour, compelling composition and Impressionist-inflected technique, these paintings are admired for their beauty, yet at the same time have the power to transport viewers into a romantic world of myth and legend." "Waterhouse's art reflects not only his distinctive ideal of female beauty, but also a lifelong fascination with the Romantic and Symbolist themes of passion, magic and transformation - spiritual, erotic and physical. These themes also reflect the complex and ambivalent attitudes of his age. Peter Trippi presents a new analysis of Waterhouse's enchantresses, martyrs and nymphs, at the same time presenting a fresh and thoroughly researched review of this surprisingly enigmatic artist's life and the circumstances in which he painted." Like other Victorian artists, Waterhouse was neglected through much of the twentieth century, but today he is acknowledged as a crucial inheritor of the Pre-Raphaelite legacy. Peter Trippi's monograph provides a timely re-evaluation that combines a close reading of Waterhouse's imagery with a new appraisal of his unique and enduring qualities.

This is the most complete book on Waterhouse I've come across yet. When researching this artist, I was surprised to find that there were very few books written just about Waterhouse. Without this book, it would have been very hard to research him at all.

The book is laid out beautifully so that even if you never read the whole thing, you can enjoy it. The paintings are displayed in full color and many of them cover a whole page. Sketches and other art by Waterhouse's contemporaries as well as art that he was inspired by are also included.

The book is laid out like an illustrated biography. Starting from birth to death, Trippi shows Waterhouse's life by his paintings and sketches since very few written documents of his life survive. Each chapter shows an era in his life and how he changed over the years by style and technique. Trippi explains much of the background of the paintings and mentions artwork still missing as well as other mysteries of Waterhouse's life. This is skillfully told including all the elements you want when getting to know an artist; his life, color pictures, inspirations, contemporaries, techniques and more.

I loved reading through this and at the end felt a heightened respect for the artist. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to know more about Waterhouse.

I wished to explore this style of work for it's technical and narrative aspects, via exemplars of such in the era of this tradition.

The hardback edition of this book is a gorgeous thing to have. Fact and works are all there beautifully arranged. Whether you love or not Waterhouse's works this is a must have book to any book shelf.

I was inclined to buy it following the path of excellent reviews at Amazon.com and I am not disappointed.

I love boks on painting that give a good balance between the artists' lives and their works, which is something not so common as you would think it should be.

Have it.

This is the best book on the works of John William Waterhouse to date. From Waterhouse's early works to his decline in popularity after World War 1 to his rediscovery, everything you wanted to know about his works and the man himself. Also his master works like Saint Cecilia, Hylas and the Nymphs and many others are presented in wonderful color to take your breath away. If that wasn't enough some addition works from Rossetti, Burn-Jones and Millais and other Victorian era artists are also featured here. This the ultimate book for lovers of Waterhouse's art works.

One of my favorite painters. There is just something so intensely romantic about his work, and that of the Pre-Raphaelites in general. JW Waterhouse seems to convey a certain deep yearning that is intrinsic to great poetry, mythology and literature. I have a special love for poetry and his paintings are a kind of visual poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive work on the art of JW Waterhouse
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2023
A chunky hardback book with sublime reproductions of his major works; full details/information about the classical representations involved; a perspective (influences/thinking) on the art scene during Victorian times and of his various peers; with contemporaneous critical opinion of the work as it appeared in exhibitions at the time; and, how JWW's work gradually went out of fashion. The epilogue brings us up to date with more recent opinions, prices and perspective. Peter Trippi has truly delivered a marvellous book which has added to our knowledge and understanding of the artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bel ouvrage d'art
Reviewed in France on September 22, 2010
