Continuing from part 2, where we went on a 4-day safari in Kruger National Park. On our way back to Johannesburg, we stopped at the Blyde River Canyon as part of the final item on our itinerary provided by Viva Safaris. It was an hour stop, and boy, what a view it was!

Prior to arriving in Africa, I googled Blyde River Canyon to get some ideas on what to expect, and I saw a photo of a person hanging his legs out on a cliff. That's when my mind was set - I need to get this picture of myself when I'm there! Mission accomplished!

This journal will be a short one, but it will feature one of the best photos I (or my friends) have ever taken. Without further ado, let's enjoy the scenery of the breathtaking South African landscapes.

What to Pack for Blyde River Canyon, South Africa?

As you may already know, I am an advocate of light traveling, and indeed, packing light for a journey like this is a unique art form. Here are some packing tips for your upcoming trip to Blyde River Canyon, South Africa:

  • Walking/Hiking Shoes: With all the walking and possible hiking during your travel, a comfortable pair of shoes is a must. I recommend the Timberland 3-Eye Classic Boat Shoes that are my go-to pair for long strolls and hikes.
  • Breathable Shirts: Given the potential for hot weather, pack a few breathable shirts for your outdoor adventures.
  • Shorts/Jeans: Anticipate lots of walking during your travels? Be sure to pack some breathable shorts and a pair of Levi's jeans for when the weather cools. For women, leggings are excellent for both hot and cold climates, so consider packing some as well.
  • Fleece Jacket: For colder weather, layering is the key, and a fleece jacket makes an excellent insulating layer. I recommend the Columbia Steens Mountain Fleece (for women).
  • Outer Shell Jacket: An outer shell jacket is great for windy or rainy conditions. I highly recommend the Columbia Watertight Jacket (for women). It's lightweight, breathable, and even comes in a cool orange color.
  • Microfiber Towel: A Microfiber towel is the ideal backpacker's towel due to its lightness, quick drying, and compressibility.
  • Camera: You should also pack a good camera for your trip so that you can capture all the beautiful experiences you might have. I recommend the Sony a7R V camera together with the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II lens, which is probably the highest-performance camera and lens combination you can get right now.
  • Power Bank: Keep your electronics charged on the go with a 20,000+ mAh Power Bank.
  • Water Bottle: The Hydro Flask Trail Water Bottle is a great insulated water bottle to have with you in cities or on hiking trails. It is lightweight and can keep your water cold or warm for more than 12 hours. It's a total game-changer.
  • Universal Adapter: You'll need just one universal adapter to plug in your electronics in any country you visit.
  • Packing Cubes: Packing Cubes will help you save space in your backpack and keep all your belongings organized.
  • Daypack: The Langly Alpha Globetrotter is my go-to everyday camera backpack. It's large enough to carry all my travel gear, and it comes with plenty of slots and pouches. Plus, it's stylish as hell!
  • Large Backpack: You will need a large backpack to carry all of your stuff. I recommend the Osprey Atmos AG 65L backpack. With excellent weight distribution and a lifetime guarantee, you can't go wrong with Osprey.

And here's our little expedition before we part ways on different paths of life. When you've been traveling alone for so long, a little companion like this is a refreshing change.

After an hour at the Blyde River Canyon, we headed back to Johannesburg as Viva Safaris dropped us off at our designated hostels. Since I had to leave for Zambia the next day, I decided to stay at the hostel near the airport. I went and grabbed a couple of beers with the 2 Swiss ladies, shared several good laughs, and then we went our separate ways the next day.

Coming up, the last entry of my African trip to the journal, we will end our journey exploring a little town called Livingstone in Zambia and grace upon the mighty Victoria Falls. Have you ever wanted to see the Victoria Falls with your own eyes? Stay tuned.

Hello,
I love you blog and photo at Blyde Canyon. I am planing on traveling along the panorama route and want to take a photo in the same location. Was the stopping point at a Blyde Canyon lookout or at the Three Rondavels lookout. Is it possible for you to drop me a pin on google maps at the location where you took this photo? If you could, I would be so appreciative. Thanks for your consideration

Good day Pete,

Me and my partner also love travelling the globe and stay in Nelspruit, close to the Blyde River Canyon and Kruger National Park. Well relatively close. lol. Any case when you do travel in Mpumalanga again, get in contact and we will take you to more awesome places here. Obviously not charges, just for the love of travel. We will take you Adam's Calendar, which is currently the oldest man made structure in the world, 75 000 years old and older as Stonehenge. Kaapsehoop, Battery Creek Waterfall, God's Window, Mac Mac pools, Graskop gorge where you can also go swing into the gorge and list goes on.

Happy Friday further!!

Regards,

Teamtequila

Hey Christine,

Definitely. I have not had a chance to go back to South Africa yet but hopefully soon. Very interesting about the attractions around Mpumalanga. I didn't have much time there unfortunately but next time, i'll try to explore more thoroughly and thank you for the offer. I really appreciate it. :)

Best,

Pete R.
