The walking and hiking trail options in Cape Town are virtually endless, from Table Mountain to Lion's Head, Signal Hill to Kirstenbosch. Just make sure you do your research, carry water, and have a reliable map—and whatever you do, please don't wear sandals. In the summertime, it's best to schedule your hike in the early morning to avoid high temperatures and hordes of people (probably in sandals). Here's what you should know about some of the city's best hiking spots:
Lion’s Head is one of Cape Town’s most popular mountains to climb. Unlike Table Mountain, the top can’t be reached by cable car. While it isn't a particularly strenuous hike, the climb to the top can be steep, with the use of chains at the end to help you ascend. But once you reach the summit, you'll find the astounding views an apt reward. If you're after something a little less challenging, head to the trail available at the base of the mountain. It's a much quieter option with fewer people—extra reason to take a map.
Table Mountain has numerous trails to the top. One of the most popular is Platteklip Gorge, a pretty hike with a straight, steep ascent. The trail starts close to the cableway station at the base of the mountain and is clearly marked all the way up. If you don't think your legs can handle the walk down, there is a cable car you can ride to the bottom. After descending both Table Mountain and Lion's Head, stop by The Roundhouse for a well-deserved drink.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden—one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world—is the best place to take a casual walk in Cape Town, especially when paired with a picnic along the way. With an array of indigenous plants and Table Mountain as a backdrop, you're guaranteed to find an area to explore (particularly if you're a lover of flora and fauna). The Kirstenbosch Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway is a popular path along a steel bridge with magnificent views. During the summer, Kirstenbosch hosts concerts in the evenings, so check out the schedule to make sure you don't miss the opportunity to watch a live band or orchestra under the stars, surrounded by nature.
