Everyone loves neutral colours: they are classic, safe and versatile. However, it's easy for neutral interiors to slip into bland or sterile territory. Perhaps you would love to incorporate the latest colour trends or inject more warmth into your scheme, but are finding it hard to branch out from white?

Enter Matthew Williamson, renowned interior designer and author of Living Bright, known for his vibrant, patterned style.

Mini masterclass: How to add colour to neutral interiors

These are Matthew's top tips for brightening up a neutral palette and finding a colour scheme that you love...

1.Warm it up

Swap cool neutrals like white and grey, which can feel a little flat and bland, for warmer neutral shades of pink, tan, clay or stone, that are more cosy and inviting.

2. Use the rule of three

Limit your scheme to three colours: use the palest for walls, ceiling and woodwork, a complementary but slightly bolder shade for large pieces like sofas and beds, and a brighter colour for accessories such as cushions and lampshades.

3. Find a palette

Take pictures of colour combos you like while out and about, or draw inspiration from treasured possessions like a painting, plate or printed scarf. It’s one of the best ways to figure out what scheme will work best for you.
