Rumor has it that when Hobart Manufacturing Company was testing their first “food preparer” for in-home use, one housewife told executives, “I don’t care what you call it, it’s the best kitchen aid I’ve ever had.” And thus, the KitchenAid stand mixer was born.

While the validity of that story may be debatable, there’s no denying that a quality stand mixer is a worthy addition to any baker’s arsenal. Whether you’re mixing brownie batter, beating eggs for the perfect omelet, kneading bread dough, or whisking whipped cream to top a fluffy chocolate mousse, a solid stand mixer takes most of the manual labor out of baking. That way, you can focus your attention on more important things, like flavor and measurements and actually enjoying your fresh, homemade desserts.

When Covid sparked what we’ll call the Big Baking Bonanza of 2020, stand mixers began to see a huge increase in demand. And, predictably, a big rise in cost followed. Considering these inflated prices don't appear to be going down anytime soon, we know you probably have a few questions before making such a significant investment.

We’re happy to offer expert answers, courtesy of the Good Housekeeping Institute and the director of their Kitchen Appliances & Culinary Innovation Lab, Nicole Papantoniou. From the longest-lasting models to the machines with the biggest capacities, we’ve rounded up the best stand mixers for every baker and budget.

How we picked these products

Good House Keeping Institute Lab Tested Badge

To find the best stand mixer, we turned to our friends at the Good Housekeeping Institute. They've identified the best brands and highest-rated stand mixers on the market and put them to the test. Their team of experts—which includes all types: engineers! data analysts! registered dietitians!—rigorously put everyday products to the test (and then more and more tests) in their New York City-based labs to determine which ones you can trust.

From whipping egg whites and heavy cream to mixing, creaming, and scraping while preparing batch after batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, these Kitchen Tech Experts put 13 models through over 80 hours of rigorous tests to analyze their ease of use, noise level during operation, cleanability, speed, and performance. After reviewing their findings and discussing their road tests in-depth with Papantoniou, we’ve determined that these five are the best stand mixers you can buy in 2022.

Pros
  • Ultra-customizable
  • Top performer during tests
Cons
  • Often out of stock

When you picture a stand mixer, you probably think of the KitchenAid Artisan. Sturdy, dependable, and functional, there’s nothing you can’t bake with this baby. Its accessories include a 6-wire stainless steel whip, a clear plastic pouring shield, and a nylon-coated Flex Edge flat beater and PowerKnead spiral dough hook.

“This is the entry-level stand mixer from KitchenAid,” said Papantoniou. “It has everything you need to mix, whip and knead, and is fully customizable.”

In addition to boasting a 325-watt motor and a power hub for additional attachments (we’re partial to the Meat Grinder, Pasta Press, and Sifter & Scale attachments ourselves), the stainless steel Artisan features a tilt-up head design that makes changing attachments and adding ingredients a breeze. Pair that with the ergonomic handle on the 5-quart bowl, and your worries will melt away like butter into batter.

An increase in demand and various supply chain bottlenecks has resulted in the price of KitchenAid stand mixers skyrocketing by about 40% since before the pandemic. Even with that major increase, they’re still flying off the shelves faster than they can be restocked. It doesn’t look like it’ll return to pre-pandemic availability (or prices) any time soon, so if you see an Artisan you like that isn’t too overpriced, your best bet is to pull the trigger sooner rather than later. It’ll be well-worth the investment, especially with its 1-year warranty.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Good performance for price
Cons
  • Smaller capacity
  • Fewer speeds

Save some dough while making dough with the Hamilton Beach Electric Stand Mixer. As user-friendly as it is budget-friendly, this model packs a powerful punch at an affordable price. In fact, it earned a high score in nearly all of the Good Housekeeping Institute’s tests.

Though Papantoniou hasn’t evaluated this specific model herself, she considers it to be a solid affordable option thanks to its intuitive design. “The knob to control the speed can be helpful and makes it easier to adjust the speed, while the guide at the top helps you determine what speed you should use,” she said.

Speaking of speed, that’s the one thing that sets the Hamilton Beach Electric Stand Mixer apart from its more expensive competitors. Unlike the Artisan and Professional 600, this countertop appliance only comes equipped with seven speeds and a smaller 4-quart capacity.

However, this stainless steel mixer’s thoughtful design makes up for the fewer speed settings with a tilt-up head, 300-watt motor, a handle on top for easy lifting, and suction cups on the bottom to hold it in place. But wait, there’s more! The Hamilton Beach Electric Stand Mixer comes with a splash guard, dough hook, whisk, and flat beater, so you can whip endless egg whites and bake batch after batch of brownies without breaking a sweat.

Pros
  • Larger capacity
  • Soft-start setting
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Heavy

If you frequently find yourself working with heavy doughs or making large batches of baked goods, the KitchenAid Professional 600 Series is an excellent investment. This stand mixer is largely the same as the Artisan: Both have 10 speeds, a 1-year warranty, and nearly the same accessories, including a plastic pouring shield, stainless steel wire whip, flat beater, and PowerKnead spiral dough hook. But the Professional 600 is, just, well, more.

“It has a larger bowl and is more powerful,” said Papantoniou. “Unlike the Artisan, the head doesn’t tilt up, the height of the bowl adjusts.” Other differences include a soft-start setting to prevent your ingredients from flying out of the 6-quart bowl, which can bake up to 13 dozen cookies at a time.

The Professional 600 may offer more power (575 watts) and a larger capacity, but unfortunately, all those extras also give it a larger footprint and more heft, which can make it a bit more difficult to store. Some of its heavy weight can also be attributed to this mixer’s sturdier stainless steel and iron construction.

Pros
  • 12 speeds
  • 3-year warranty
Cons
  • Poor with stiffer doughs

The beauty of the Cuisinart SM-50 isn’t in the beat; it’s in its design. As one of the most versatile stand mixers on the market, this model’s thoughtful design includes a tilt-back head and a power outlet at the top for optional attachments, including an ice cream maker, spiralizer, and pasta roller and cutter.

“It has a really wide range of speeds, so you can truly fold something in, and the knob makes it easy to control,” Papantoniou said. “It performed just as well as the KitchenAids in our tests, but it’s at a cheaper price point and has more affordable attachments available for purchase.”

In fact, the Cuisinart SM-50 has 12 speeds, which is more than any other option we recommend, as well as a 5.5-quart polished stainless steel bowl and 500-watt motor that puts it right on the heels of the KitchenAid Professional 600 Series in terms of power and capacity. Plus, it comes with a stainless steel chef’s whisk, dough hook, flat mixing paddle, and splash guard with a pour spout. And if that’s not enough to impress you, the 3-year warranty most definitely will.

Best Small Stand Mixer

Best Small Stand Mixer

Pros
  • Small footprint
Cons
  • Unsuitable for large batches

Who says you need a ton of space in your kitchen to own a quality stand mixer? With a bowl that can hold 3.5 quarts of your favorite cake mix, KitchenAid’s Artisan Mini Stand Mixer is about 25% lighter and 20% smaller than the standard-size Artisan. But don’t let the compact size fool you: Its 250-watt motor is powerful enough for nearly any task or recipe, whether you’re combining wet and dry ingredients, kneading bread dough, or whipping heavy cream.

The Artisan Mini is largely the same as its bigger sibling—both boast 10 speeds, a tilt-up head design, and, of course, KitchenAid’s 1-year warranty. It just comes in a smaller package. “It’s just a more compact size that stores more easily," Papantoniou said. "It’s a little bit lighter, and you can’t produce as many cookies, but it’s a good go-to if you have a smaller kitchen.”

It’s good to note that the Artisan Mini’s die-cast zinc construction is better able to withstand corrosion, but is less durable than the stainless steel body of the Artisan. And while this model only comes with a dough hook, wire whip, and flat beater, it has one trick up its metaphorical sleeve: Like the Professional, it also includes a soft-start function.

How long do stand mixers last?

delish line break

It may seem like your mom’s KitchenAid has lasted forever, but that’s just as much due to how she cared for it over the years.

“Many old KitchenAids have been passed down for generations—I still use my grandma’s,” said Papantoniou. “They’re designed to last, so ultimately, look at the manufacturer’s warranty, and that will help give you guidance on how long they’ll last.”

To keep your stand mixer whipping, mixing, and beating for years to come, here are some tips you can follow:

  • Don’t overload your stand mixer. Papantoniou recommended that users “read what the maximum size is, because companies do extensive testing and that maximum limit is in your user guide for a reason—you don’t want to overload it.”
  • Don’t forget to clean it—all of it. “The biggest thing is making sure you clean it every time you use it. I would use a damp cloth to wipe down the exterior and make sure you’re washing the bowl. Even if the accessories are dishwasher-safe I would hand-wash them to prevent chipping and scratching and allow all stainless steel accessories to dry fully before you put them away after cleaning,” advised Papantoniou.
  • We're all familiar with that gunky paste that forms when errant crumbs and granules get wet. To prevent clumps and buildup that can muck up and wear down your appliance, always dust off your mixer with a clean cloth and sweep away any extra crumbs with a dry pastry brush after working with flour and other dry goods.
  • If you want to avoid any stains or stickiness after working with wet ingredients, like thick batters or more syrupy liquids, immediately wipe down your stand mixer with a damp rag or sponge. Then, dry it off with a clean dish towel.
  • That bowl is for more than just mixing. For easy storage and organization, stash your stand mixer's attachments in the bowl after you're finished using it. (Pro-tip: You can wrap them up in a dish towel or cloth to help prevent scratches.)

What should you look for in a stand mixer?

squiggle

Considering those aforementioned supply chain issues, it can be tempting to just buy the first stand mixer you come across. But given how long they can last (and how much they cost) you want to be sure that relationship with your machine is a long and happy one. Here are some other factors you should consider while you shop:

Design: There are two common styles of stand mixers: tilt-head and bowl-lift. As the name might suggest, the tops of tilt-head models can be pushed back to pour ingredients directly into the bowl. This design should be appropriate for most users, but if you do a lot of heavy-duty baking, a bowl-lift model may be worth the extra expense. Made to essentially pick up a mixing bowl and bring it to the beaters, these stand mixers are better equipped to handle a larger bowl size.

Materials are another design feature that you should keep in mind when looking for a stand mixer. Higher-quality machines are usually constructed of coated metal—either stainless steel, which is more durable, or zinc, which is more resistant to corrosion. But with a price tag that’s as heavy as, well, a metal stand mixer, the added benefits of stability and cleanability may not be worth it for the casual baker. For a less expensive and easier to lift option, you should consider a plastic appliance, but keep in mind that their lightweight design may be more prone to wear-and-tear or moving around while in use.

Accessories: There are three attachments you should make sure your machine comes with: A whisk, a dough hook, and a paddle. Depending on your budget, you can also splurge on a model with extra tools, like a scraper. For optimal versatility, many brands also offer the option to buy additional attachments based on your needs and interests. These include meat grinders, pasta makers, juicers, food processors, and even ice cream makers. Keep in mind, however, that certain brands offer attachments at more affordable prices than others, which could eat away at your budget.

Size: When shopping for a stand mixer, it’s important to consider the size of your work space, the height of your cabinets, and how you plan to store it when it’s not in use. It's also wise to consider a model's weight if you plan on storing it in your cabinet or pantry, as you'll need to be able to easily lift and move the mixer. Bigger may seem better, but Papantoniou said most home bakers don’t need the largest size.

“The average bowl size is 4.5-5 quarts, and you can do most tasks with that,” she explained. “Anything larger would be for more professional baking or making larger items like multiple loaves of bread.”

But a lack of available kitchen space doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the fun. For example, most people are familiar with the 5-quart KitchenAid Artisan and its bigger sibling, the 6-quart KitchenAid Professional 600 Series, but in 2016, KitchenAid introduced its smallest mixer yet: The 3.5-quart Artisan Mini. (And for what it’s worth, the Good Housekeeping Institute found hand mixers worked just as well as stand mixers during their tests.)

Wattage: The higher a motor's watts, the more powerful it is. This is one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a stand mixer. After all, you don’t want to find out too late that your appliance can’t handle those two trays of cupcakes you promised for the school bake sale, do you?

Papantoniou recommends that the best wattage for a stand mixer is “around 250 watts.” However, you should always consider what you’ll be baking with your appliance (and how much). A standard motor can handle your typical tasks, like mixing cake batter, but for thicker, heavier doughs, like pizza dough, you’ll need more wattage.
