The lead vocalist of the Irish rock group U2, Bono, has sent a letter to President Moon Jae-in asking for medical equipment to help Ireland combat the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Cheong Wa Dae Spokesperson Kang Min-seok on April 12 announced the content of the letter in a written briefing.

According to the briefing, Bono expressed his deep gratitude to both President Moon and Korea's leading role in the process of responding to COVID-19, saying the entire world appreciates the leadership being demonstrated by Korea in saving lives.

With the number of confirmed cases spiking in Ireland, Bono said he wanted to make a polite request that Korea share its insight, knowledge and above all, available equipment.

The singer also said he wants to purchase with his own funds personal protective equipment, other medical equipment and diagnostic kits produced or stocked by Korea and donate them to Ireland.

In his written response sent on April 10, President Moon said Korea is actively sharing with the international community the country's quarantine and treatment experience and clinical data accumulated during its response to the outbreak.

On Bono's request to purchase medical equipment, the president wrote that he will take steps to ensure related consultations can be made with the relevant authorities.

President Moon said he believes that Ireland will also wisely overcome the COVID-19 crisis based on the potential of the Irish people, who have overcome numerous crises and challenges. He added that he looks forward to Bono continuing to play a significant role as a messenger of peace for the world.
