Portobellini Mushrooms – Full of taste, full of energy

Portobellini Mushrooms – Full of taste, full of energy

The Portobellini, botanically classified as Agaricus Bisporus is also known as Chestnut mushrooms, Cremini and Baby Bella. This wonderful mushroom looks like the White mushroom - apart from its brown colour - but packs a more intense umami flavor.

Αgaricus Bisporus has been known since ancient times. More specifically, in Egypt, they believed that it gives to the consumer special powers of eternal life. In Rome, it was often classified as the “Food of the Gods”, in Mexican folklore mushrooms gave people superhuman strength and in traditional Chinese medicine it was being used to help regulate the body's energy and to increase milk production for breastfeeding mothers!

The Portobellini mushrooms are allowed to grow further in size, developing a darker skin and an open-cap exposing the gills on the underside; they are then called Portobello.

How will you taste them? Before cooking, the mushrooms should be wiped with a damp paper towel, lightly rinsed and patted dry or brushed to be cleaned. And then, you can combine them with teriyaki sauce, cream-based sauces, pesto, feta, kefalotyri cheese etc. They can also be sliced and mixed into salads, soups and rice dishes.
