Description

Georgia O’Keeffe became a famous artist at a time when there weren’t many women artists. She created large scale Modern art in the United States, and she was well-known for her paintings of flowers.

Elementary students like to learn about O’Keeffe when they get to draw on a large scale too. This hands-on art project provides students with the opportunity to improve their observational skills by drawing what they see. This drawing assignment also allows students to practice using scale. This downloadable zip file includes a PDF lesson plan that describes how to teach a large scale crayon drawing.  “Georgia O’Keeffe Check out that Giant Flower” is an 8 slide PowerPoint to introduce students to O’Keeffe paintings, which includes quotes from the artist about her work. “Georgia O’Keeffe Style Flowers Sunflower” is an over-the-top and elaborate 103 slide PowerPoint that demonstrates all the steps and techniques to create a large scale drawing of a flower. The prepared demonstration will help the teacher save precious prep-time, and the photo tutorial doesn’t take as long to show the students as a live demonstration. This will result in more student work time.
