K-pop boy band Wanna One apologise for unfiltered remarks
K-pop boy band Wanna One caused controversy on Monday after Mnet broadcast their candid comments, which included swearing and complaining, hurting sales of their new album released the same day.
The group's agency YMC Entertainment apologised for Wanna One’s scandalous remarks on Mnet's Star Live. The band released their second EP “0+1=1 (I Promise You)” the same day.
“We will make sure similar incidents do not happen again,” YMC said.
Mnet released a behind-the-scenes video clip of the members bantering before performing.
In the footage, Park Ji-hoon was shouting about their lack of freedom.
“Why don't we get paid?” Kang Daniel said.
Park also complained about the members getting only 20 per cent of what they earn. Ong Seong-wu went on to complain about his lack of sleep.
Kang even mentioned, in vulgar terms, using the bathroom in the morning.
The lead track from Wanna One's latest release, Boomerang, reached No 1 on Mnet Music, and No 2 on Melon, Soribada, Bugs Music and Naver Music at 8am on Tuesday. The boy band’s performance was weaker than I.P.U., released two weeks ago, which tops seven charts.
Made up of 11 winners from the second season of the Mnet show Produce 101,″ the band released their first album “1X1=1 To Be One” in August, which sold more than 740,000 copies. Their repackaged version, “1-1=0 (Nothing Without You)”, sold more than 610,000 copies. They won awards for Best Male Group, Best New Male Artists and Best of Next Artists at the 2017 Mnet Asia Music Awards (MAMA).
Wanna One posted an apology on their official fan page and website as the clip spread fast across YouTube.
“We apologise to our fans for acting badly,” Wanna One said.
