Dirty Dancing sequel starring original 'Baby' Jennifer Grey in the works... 33 years after the original with Patrick Swayze dominated the box office

After rumors began circulating last month, it's now confirmed that Baby Houseman is back for some more Dirty Dancing.

On Thursday, Deadline confirmed that actress Jennifer Grey is signed on for a new installment following the iconic 80s film, as both star and executive producer.

The news came as part of Lionsgate Films' earnings call, on which chief executive officer Jon Feltheimer confirmed the project.

'It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history,' Feltheimer said.

Grey, now 60, played the lead role of Baby in the 1987 original film, as a shy and awkward vacationer at a 1950s-era Catskills resort who becomes swept away by the rugged and handsome local dance teacher Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

In addition to earning almost $220 million at the worldwide box office after just a $5 million production budget, Dirty Dancing quickly became a hallmark of pop culture, thanks in no small part to Grey and Swayze's electric chemistry, the Oscar-winning music and, of course, the timeless 'Dirty Dancing lift'.

At the time, both Grey and Swayze scored Golden Globe nominations for their roles, in the Comedy or Musical category.

Dirty Dancing also made history as the first film ever to sell over a million copies via home video.

The movie also had two multi-platinum soundtrack releases: the original and a 1988 follow-up titled More Dirty Dancing.

Tragically, Swayze will not be part of the new film, as he passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer in 2009.

Since the first film, reboots and sequels have come in the form of 2004's Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights starring Diego Luna, and a TV movie 'musical re-imagining' in 2017.

That movie featured Abigail Breslin in the Baby role.

The new film, said to be set in the 1990s, will be helmed by The Wackness director Jonathan Levine, from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis.

Apart from Dirty Dancing and an equally classic comedic featured turn in Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986, Grey has largely worked in smaller roles including on Friends in 1995.

The daughter of Oscar winner Joel Grey, Jennifer recently split from her longtime husband Clark Gregg after 19 years of marriage.
