The '60s-Era Evening Belt Is Back In Business
There are numerous moments in the course of a Versace show that make you sit up a little bit straighter in your seat. At the Italian label's autumn/winter 2019 show, highlights included the revival of the safety pin motif, lots of bondage – and Stephanie Seymour, back on the catwalk at 50. You'd be forgiven, therefore, for missing a thin, slippery strand of gold chain-link metal slung over black satin, from which drooped a golden "V", adorning the lithe waist of Gigi Hadid.
It was a timely reminder that, especially when it comes to after-dark black, accessories doth maketh the look. In particular, evening belts, which are quietly sliding back into the spotlight as stealthily as statement earrings did several years ago. At Alessandra Rich, they're loud and proud, choked with rhinestones and designed to cinch in a waist in bombastically seductive fashion. At Valentino and Gucci, and new Australian brand Valére, there's more of an exotic Sixties vibe afoot: wear them with a mini dress and flat sandals and channel Veruschka (specifically, Veruschka lensed by Franco Rubartelli).
