Infuriating toner issues - won't ever buy again
Infuriatedˇ Review provided by bestbuy.ca ˇ October 31, 2022
This printer does not allow you to print in black even with a full cartridge if one of the colour cartridges is low. There has not been a way around it. My old Canon, which I had for many years, always allowed me to print in black no matter the status of the colour cartridges. This is absolutely infuriating. Also, I've installed new cartridges, and the printer immediately says they are empty. Or, as another reviewer says, you have to clean the heads and that uses up most or all of the toner. I almost never print in colour yet my colour cartridges last only a few months then I'm forced to replace them. The XL black one, despite me only printing a handful of pages over a few months, also runs out. Don't believe the "# of pages" claim. It is a tremendous rip-off and I won't buy a Brother again despite initially liking it. Another point is that the screen and buttons are unnecessarily complex and hard to figure out without a lot of consternation.
Overall better than HP Envy
JT on Brotherˇ Review provided by brother-usa.com ˇ May 4, 2020
The 'Brother' printer self-cleans; the 'HP Envy' printer does not and the cleaning function needs to be constantly performed on the 'Envy'.

The 'Brother' printer has separate cartridges for cyan/yellow/magenta/black, clearly denoting cartridge ink levels. Furthermore, the 'Brother' printer's ink cartridges do not deplete automatically, whereas the 'HP Envy' ink cartridges constantly needed to be replaced, even when little to no printing had been performed for an extended time frame.

The 'Brother' printer has a scan function that allows page insert prior to a page already scanned; the 'HP Envy' does not.

The only major drawback shared by both printers is that a scan function ought to default to the ENTIRE scan area. I am not sure why limitations are preset for the scan size when the scan window is a fixed size anyway.

Overall the 'Brother' printer outperforms the 'HP Envy' in terms of ink efficiency and reliable printing output, yet the scan defaults stand for common-sense improvement.
Performs well in all respects. Absolute buy recommendation for occasional print jobs at home/home office

Previous owner of a Canon Pixma 922. We need a home office solution, color print about 3 pages/day. Occasional photo. This Brother printer has so far exceeded our expectations in all respects. Easy, sufficiently compressed scanning; clean document printing; easy installation of software that is glitch-free; sufficiently good photo print, although so slow that we thought the print was broken... With the exception of the missing double sided ADF scan or copy feature (we knew this before purchase), this is a really good printer for our needs. I am thinking about buying a second, just as a backup when the first will inevitably fail in about two years...
Great price at Adorama.
As a nice surprise it appears that cartridges that came with the printer are quite full.
Not For You If You're Easily Frustrated
BBeaderˇ Review provided by walmart.com ˇ April 21, 2020
Works beautifully WHEN it works. Frequently goes offline. Last time it took me 3 hrs to get it back operating by the grace of God. It is extremely frustrating because I don't use it that often. Bought it in December and this is April. Do your research before buying. Google "Brother Printer Offline" and you'll see how common the problem is with this printer. Un-checking the printer offline box on the print query drop down menu does not work. I unplugged it, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, ran the trouble shooter, and made it the default printer several times before it finally spit out a test page. All of the connections were fine, nothing had changed since I used it last month. Never know with this printer if it's going to work. Don't nobody have time to be doing all that just to get a printer to consistently work. Brother has got to be aware of the problem but have not come up with a solution that I'm aware of. Should see a solution pop up from them first on a Google search instead of others offering solutions to this problem.
