All in all, I'm happy with the phone.

The phone arrived a few days earlier than expected, which was great. I am one who still likes having a landline, as I don't want the constant emf exposure from the cell. I like this phone because it has a screen which shows both the number I'm dialing, as well as the number of who's calling (caller ID). Caller ID of course works in conjunction with this service from the phone co. When I push the "Call List" button, I can review the caller list and the screen shows the number and date of the call. I can easily erase phone numbers from storage that are no longer needed. On a prior phone of this model, the calls were not in the Call List in chronological order, so a particular number wasn't easy to find. With this new phone, that function is in order. This phone has memory buttons for auto dial and an adequate speaker phone, so that if I'm stuck on hold I can put the phone in the cradle. There's a volume button to adjust the incoming sound, particularly useful for the speaker phone function. The caller has typically been able to hear me on speaker, when I am a couple of feet away. On my prior phone of this model, the speaker phone stopped working, but that was after a few years of use. This phone doesn't plug into an outlet and does use four double A batteries. There is not a built-in jack for a headset one can wear, however a headset that plugs into a jack on the phone can be used in place of the receiver, if needed. This phone screen has a clock, which I find sometimes loses a minute or so per day, so periodically I have to reset it. All in all, I'm happy with the phone.
Landline phone works well all round

Plain old-style push-button landline phone. I use it on desktop. Looks like it can be used as a wall phone if that's what you want. About the same as the one I had since the '90s (retired last month due to too many coffee spills). Has speed dial, large numbers, nice-sounding ring (set to Off, Low, High, your choice). Good clear sound on local and long distance calls. Has Speaker, I haven't tried that. For my landline needs, works well all round.
AT&T CL2909 One Line Corded Telephone, White
BILL· Review provided by staples.com · February 3, 2021
Unless this original newly packaged unit was indeed defective that I both purchased & returned to the same Staples store location within 2 days, the phone's ringer even if set at its loudest possible level, was lowest at best in volume; and could only be heard for up to a maximum distance of 4 feet or so away. But that was its best case scenario only if no other type sounds had simultaneously taken place in the room the unit was stationed when tested upon receipt of incoming test calls I made from my cellular line; despite also being present in that same room.

As a past 3 decades worth owner of AT&T land line phones, an alternative similar looking AT&T White color one line phone packaged in the same Light Blue/White combo color selling box is their "CL4940" model. However, this unit is a slightly higher priced Corded One Line Phone/Answering System which I purchased in replacement; despite currently having no foreseeable need to ever utilize the answering system.

This unit also has an adjustable ringer volume control which when set in contrast at lower than its maximum volume capacity, still permits incoming call rings to be heard as anyone would have otherwise expected their CL2909 unit to have normally performed. That's regardless of whether other simultaneous sounds or outside noise of any type occur; plus in the event if you are stationed more than 4 feet away. including if being in another separate room whenever incoming calls are received.
MOSTLY POSITIVE . . .

Perhaps too soon to leave a review as I've only been using the phone for two weeks.

Phone is sturdy for being so lightweight, volume is excellent through both the receiver and the speaker, instructions are easy to follow, it may be used as a desk phone or attached to the wall, the ringer can be adjusted to off and vital for me, it ONLY attaches to the phone jack, NOT to an outlet. This is important for power outages. Also, the price was just and Staples sells a warranty if interested.

Two things would make this phone perfect: a light showing incoming calls and a light behind the caller ID window. There are instructions to make the caller ID numbers darker, but doing so fades it into the background making it impossible to discern.

Other than the preceding two issues, I would highly recommend this phone.
