Emblematic, The Dancing Girl is a very old sculpture, dating from 2300 BC. If its minimalist style is breathtakingly effective, it is not only famous for that. This sculpture would be the first to have been made in bronze. The Dancing Girl thus marks an important historical change. Previously used to make tools or weapons, bronze becomes, thanks to its unknown creator, an artistic and spiritual material.

2. Michelangelo’s nude sculptures: symbolism and technical perfection

How can we talk about nude sculptures without mentioning Michelangelo? A true touchstone in the field, Michelangelo was not only an extraordinary sculptor, but also an architect and painter. We are grateful to him for dozens of memorable works, ranging from the Pietà to Bacchus. His David is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the Renaissance. Measuring 5.17 meters high, this sculpture is as impressive in its size as it is in its technical prowess. And this work is not only a pleasure for the eyes, it also holds a strong metaphorical meaning.  Initially depicting the biblical character of David, it would later become a strong symbol in defense of civil liberties.

3. Iris, Messenger of the Gods, a double tribute

Less well known than his famous Kiss, this sculpture by Auguste Rodin is just as incredible. Like many of the artist’s sculptures, Iris, Messenger of the Gods has a strong symbolic value. On the one hand, it refers to the messenger of the gods in mythology. This character has a strong allegorical significance, since she is responsible for making the link between the gods and men. On the other hand, the dynamic and improbable posture of Iris also refers to the painting, The Origin of the World by Gustave Courbet. A double homage that makes this sculpture even more powerful than at first glance.

4. The nude sculptures of Camille Claudel: universalism and authenticity

Camille Claudel, L’Abandon, 1888

An incredibly talented sculptor, Camille Claudel was first a student, then a collaborator of Rodin. Sharing the same passion for sculpture, the two artists also became lovers. And if this love was the source of Claudel’s most beautiful masterpieces, it was also her greatest source of suffering. L’Abandon is the ultimate emblem of heartbreaking passion. Through an academic language, the artist addresses the impermanence of love, its elusive, omnipresent and devastating dimension. This sculpture is famous for its expression of universal feelings as well as the deep emotions felt by Claudel.

Having met at a porcelain sculpture company, Joan Coderch and Javier Malavia decided in 2015 to combine their talents. A brilliant idea, since it has led to the birth of works of extreme delicacy. Through a figurative approach, both artists use nude sculptures to talk about broader topics. They approach life, mythology and theater with finesse and unusual sensitivity. Even if this duo is only at the beginning, they have already become famous. In less than ten years, they have multiplied exhibitions and awards. A success in the image of their talent!

Nude sculptures: an inexhaustible source of wonder
