India, with her rich past, is home to numerous palaces; each one special in their own ways. Have you been to any of these palaces and seen up close and personal how the royals used to live back in the days? Great if you have and if you haven’t, this list will help you kickstart your palace exploration.
Most of the palaces in India are themselves great examples of mixed cultures. A lot of these palaces are inspired by the Romans, the Islamic kingdoms and many other significant influencers of those times. Standing for centuries now, these palaces deserve a visit or two.

Easily one of the most beautiful palaces in India, Amba Vilas Palace or the Mysore Palace is a work of art, an architectural marvel. The Wodeyars had this grand palace as their royal seat, and they had a great taste in art and architecture. Just look at the interiors of the palace! The palace is the best of Dravidian, Oriental, Indo-Saracenic and Roman styles of architecture.

One of the most beautiful structures in Tripura and also one of the most recognised palaces in India, Ujjayanta Palace truly fits to be a king’s abode. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore gave the palace its name and for the longest time, this palace has been the seat of many rulers. Not too long ago, in 2011, it ceased to be the Tripura Legislative Assembly. This marvel in tile and wood is a must-visit. It's a museum now.

Did you know that Vadodara’s Laxmi Vilas Palace is four times larger than Buckingham Palace? The palace is a sheer work of art, the home sweet home of the royal family of Baroda – the Gaekwads. In 1890, Major Charles Mant designed the palace for Maharaja Sayyajirao Gaekwad III in a Indo-Saracenic style of architecture; now, the palace is also a museum.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II is known for this great taste in architecture. One of the most stunning ones from his collection of grand structures is the City Palace in Jaipur. The palace has several courtyards, temples, gardens and out of these, the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple are the most frequently visited ones. Even after so many years, the Jaipur royal family continues to reside there though a large part of the palace is now converted into the City Palace Museum or the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum.

Jai Vilas Palace was built by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia in 1874. Sir Michael Filose was the architect who designed this grand structure and incorporated the European style of architecture in his designs. All three floors of this palace have different styles of architecture. First one in Tuscan style, the second in Italian Doric, and the third in Corinthian style. The erstwhile royal seat is a museum now and goes by the name Jiwaji Rao Scindia Museum.
