About the Item

Elegant vintage Art Deco mantel clock set with garniture by Orchies Manufacturer, France. French ceramic body with white crackle glaze finish and carved typical Art Deco stylized floral design with gilt application. Impressive skyscraper geometric shape. Each piece marked underside with "Orchies" company logo (windmill) and "Orchies - Made in France". Decorative enamel metal dial with concave glass protection and gilt metal frame. The clock is in working condition, but will need some servicing. We will provide the wind up key for it. The crackle clear glaze was a popular technique for animal and figural statues as well as decorative vases or other home interior decoration during the Art Deco period in France. Measurements: Mantel clock: 12.82 in. wide (32.5 cm) x 4.13 in. deep (10.5 cm) x 11.44 in. high (29 cm). Garniture each: 7.50 in. wide (19 cm) x 4.13 in. deep (10.5 cm) x 11.44 in. high (29 cm). (Measurements in item detail are for the mantel clock only). About Manufacture d'Orchies: Emile L’Herminé, already the owner of an earthenware/ceramic factory in Rimbaud, Belgium in the 1870s, and willing to increase its production moved with his brother Joseph in Orchies in 1886. Orchies, France, former fortified town of the Counts of Flanders, is located near the Belgian border and not far from Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, famous earthenware and ceramic production center since the 18th century, with "Manufacture Moulin des Loups." In 1904, he directed his production to artistic tiles under the name "L'Herminé et Cie". In 1920s, the factory of Orchies merges with earthenware factory "Hamages" and becomes the "Moulin des Loups & Hamages". The pieces are usually stamped with the windmill and capital "Orchies" name. The factory employed some 175 people in the 1910s, when the town of Orchies has only 5,000 inhabitants. The number of workers will gradually increase until it reaches more than 500 people in the years 1950-1970. The production lasted until 1980, date of the final closure.
