would be ashamed of me, but I just ate KFC's new "sandwich,"
. It's two pieces of fried chicken breast, two pieces of cheese and two pieces of bacon.
, there's "so much chicken, there wasn't room for a bun."
Before venturing out to KFC, a number of people warned me about the Double Down's level of sodium, calorie count, etc. But really, if you're dining at KFC, are you considering stuff like that anyway? I wasn't interested. I just wanted a big ol' helping of delicious.
Upon ordering, I was asked if I'd like original or grilled -- the grilled being the "healthier" sissy version without the breading. I went with original.
After only 24 hours on the menu, the women behind the counter told me that the Double Down is already a favorite item. "Everyone who came in liked it," one of the employees said. Another credited its popularity to the fact that "it's got a lot of meat."
Alas, the management was unwilling to let us go behind the scenes to film exactly how this concoction is assembled, but here's a brief video of my trip to KFC and subsequent consumption of the Double Down.
Trying out KFC's new Double Down "Sandwich" |
My verdict: The KFC Double Down is definitely tasty, but nothing I'd go out of my way to order again -- especially at the $5.49 price tag (after tax). While it wasn't spectacular, it wasn't disgusting either, as many people are making it out to be -- mostly it was like eating a couple pieces of fried chicken. Ultimately, the Double Down is a novelty -- one that was fun for a singular experience, but not one that's likely to become a staple at fast food restaurants everywhere.
