With nearly 10 million Double Downs sold in  restaurants nationwide, KFC announced plans today (Wednesday) to extend the availability of the bunless wonder past May 23.

Much hype has surrounded the sandwich since its mid-April debut.  The Double Down features two boneless white meat chicken fillets  (Original Recipe or Grilled) that act as the “buns” for a sandwich stuffed with two pieces of bacon and two slices of cheese.

The unique sandwich, which garnered a review from a New York Times food critic, was supposed to remain on the menu until May 23.

Though the Times called the Double Down “stunt food” that brings a new low for the industry, consumers apparently don’t care. Due to popular demand, KFC said today that the Double Down will stay on the menu much longer.

Javier Benito, executive vice president of marketing for KFC said: “Our plans were to feature the product only through May 23, but millions of Double Down fans have spoken and we won’t disappoint them. You’ll continue to be able to get the Double Down at KFC this summer.”

It is not a permanent menu item. KFC declined to say how long it will be available.
